The mission suffererd a major incident due to an explosion of the service module oxygen tank. In the result the moon landing had to be cancelled and the command module deactivated. The Lunar module was used as lifeboat for the crew during circulation of the moon and the return flight to earth. Shortly  before reentry, the crew entered the command module again and landed with the Apollo capsule.
